Using URL Encoder and Decoder

Encode a URL component or decode percent-encoded text. This is useful when a query parameter contains spaces, ampersands, or characters that would otherwise have a structural meaning in a URL. Component encoding is different from constructing a complete URL.

Worked example

In Encode mode, red & blue becomes red%20%26%20blue. You could use that value after ?color= in a query string. Encoding the whole address https://example.com/ would also encode its colon and slashes, which is usually not what you want when preserving the URL structure.

What to check and what this tool cannot do

The component decoder treats percent escapes as encoded bytes and can reject malformed sequences such as an incomplete percent escape. A plus sign is not automatically the same as a space in all decoding contexts; HTML form encoding has its own rules. Decoding does not prove that a link is safe or that its destination is trustworthy.

Getting a useful result

Encode each query value once. Re-encoding an already encoded value changes the percent signs to %25 and can break integrations. Inspect a decoded URL without automatically visiting it. When building an application, use its URL or query-parameter library to handle separators and repeated parameters correctly.

Where processing happens

Developer and text tools process input in your browser. PDF and image tools may attempt local conversion and use server processing when local conversion is unavailable. Website requests and usage analytics are separate from the content you enter. Large files can exceed your device’s available memory. See how tools work and our privacy policy.
