Using JSON Formatter

Validate JSON syntax and display the parsed value with indentation. Use it to inspect an API response, find a syntax mistake, or make a compact configuration easier to read. Formatting changes presentation; it is not validation against an application’s schema.

Worked example

Enter {"name":"Ada","active":true,"roles":["editor","reader"]} and run formatting. The same object is displayed on multiple indented lines. If you add a comma after the last array value, JSON parsing should fail. Remove that trailing comma and rerun the formatter.

What to check and what this tool cannot do

JSON requires double-quoted property names and strings. Comments, trailing commas, and JavaScript expressions are not valid JSON. Parsing and serializing can normalize numeric notation and collapse duplicate property names. Large integers beyond JavaScript’s safe integer range can lose precision; do not use this tool to round-trip financial identifiers or arbitrary-precision data.

Getting a useful result

Remove passwords, API tokens, and personal records before sharing an example with another person. For a configuration file, save a backup and compare the formatted output before replacing it. A green syntax result does not prove that field names, business rules, or expected data types are correct.

Where processing happens

Developer and text tools process input in your browser. PDF and image tools may attempt local conversion and use server processing when local conversion is unavailable. Website requests and usage analytics are separate from the content you enter. Large files can exceed your device’s available memory. See how tools work and our privacy policy.
