Using Base64 Encoder and Decoder

Encode text as Base64 or decode a Base64 text value. Base64 represents bytes using a restricted alphabet so they can travel through text-based systems. It increases the encoded length and does not provide encryption, authentication, or password protection.

Worked example

In Encode mode, hello becomes aGVsbG8=. In Decode mode, aGVsbG8= becomes hello. The equals sign is padding and can matter to other decoders. If you are working with an image data URL, its data:image/...;base64, prefix is separate from the encoded payload.

What to check and what this tool cannot do

This tool is intended for text rather than arbitrary binary file extraction. Not every sequence of decoded bytes is valid readable text. URL-safe Base64 uses different characters and may omit padding, so a token from another system may need that system’s decoder. Do not mistake a decoded value for a trusted or verified message.

Getting a useful result

Choose the mode before processing. Copy the complete encoded value, including padding when present. If decoding fails, check for accidental spaces, a copied data-URL prefix, or a URL-safe alphabet. For a real secret, use an appropriate encryption method; anyone with the Base64 string can decode it.

Where processing happens

Developer and text tools process input in your browser. PDF and image tools may attempt local conversion and use server processing when local conversion is unavailable. Website requests and usage analytics are separate from the content you enter. Large files can exceed your device’s available memory. See how tools work and our privacy policy.
